Jaakko Mäntyjärvi at Knox for monumental visit - Renowned Finnish choral composer setting piece for Knox, Monmouth Colleges

On Friday at 7:30 p.m., the final of three choral commissions of the past three years will come to fruition. The Knox College Choir will be performing music by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi together with Monmouth Choir at Central Congregational Church in Galesburg.

This musical phenomenon comes about due to friendships and associations. Professor of Music and director of the Knox College Choir Laura Lane taught Monmouth Choir director Tim Pahel during his undergraduate years at Knox, and now, the two are friends. Pahel is also friends with Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, having written a dissertation on him.

With a Monday Flunk Day this week, the choirs only have so much time to prepare for Friday’s concert. However, today is dress rehearsal and everyone is in good spirits, according to Lane.

With two choirs and a famous composer being featured, interested Knox students are urged to arrive early.
